When I was in high school, I always imagined spring break as the opportune time to spread out on a beach blanket, on a yacht, and drink frozen daiquiris.
Ok, I knew it never would actually happen because I’m a high key, broke-as-hell theatre student. But what I didn’t expect was to be trapped inside as Winter Storm Stella took her toll. Kinda awful. But kinda right up my ally (like I need another excuse to stay in and read or watch a Lord of the Rings marathon).
However, I’ve decided to take a few minutes and be the productive blogger that I am.
You know what that means?
As I’m curled up in bed with a cup of tea, I’m sharing with you some covers that I can’t stop grooving to. I didn’t plan to include three Ed songs…it just happened. But they’re damn good. So, get listening!
One of the fun surprises of seeing Matt in concert was to discover the opening act he chose. Overcoats is an “east coast based folk-soul duo” from New York. The team consists of Hana and JJ, and I’ve never heard anything like them before. Why? Well, Sahv could probably explain this better, but the group is so in sync with each other, not only harmonizing, but matching tone.
As an audience member, their sistership was clear, as they gave each other hugs before and after their performance, telling stories about failed flirting attempts with Hozier, and how much fun they have knitting. Oh, and they slay on stage. And when I say slay, I mean it.
Their electronic beat and lyrics of honest artistry blend together into something that the music business needs more of. I’m so tired of filtered pop songs that scorch the radio. Music fans need something more than that. And the Overcoat’s music, just like Matt’s is real. It’s genuine for the purpose of making listeners feel something, even if those feelings are dark and moody. Because, how can we know what lightness and happiness is if we tune out anything unpleasant. Hana and JJ master this balance well just like a yin-yang symbol.
Their music isn’t just entertainment, it’s something spiritual. It’s confessional.
Hey Pals! For the first installment of Musician Spotlight, I’ll be bringing your attention to Matt Corby, an Australian singer-songwriter.
Me and Sahv saw him June 14th at Union Transfer in Philly, and let me just say that if you ever get a chance to go to one of his shows, take it. I cannot stress that enough. Go see Matt. Go see him perform. He is such a sweet individual, and if you’re willing to hang out by his tour bus after the show, he will make time for you. Everyone in the band will. Including Ben, the guitarist. (We may have a low-key infatuation with Ben. Why? I don’t know. It just happened).
Corby has been flying under the radar the past few years ever since his stint on Australian Idol, and I think it’s incredible. He’s in the music business for all the right reasons, none of which appear to be fame and glory. Do you know how happy that makes my heart? While a lot of folks in his position would probably be updating social media like crazy to show off all the cool venues and give fans glimpses into his life, he is a seldom user of it.
He knows how to make fans want more (in a good way). I mean, just look at his 2012 performance for Balcony TV (clip above).
As a musician, Matt is a rare breed where he can just stand there singing and doing what he does best, mesmerizing audience members with it. Can you imagine going to a concert and have there be no dancing? No movement? Just hundreds of people staring, open mouth, letting all of the music soak into every neuron of their body? Go see him in concert, and you will know what I’m talking about. There is no flash, no pizzazz, no dancing, no choreography. Nothing except for talent, a looping device, instruments (including a bad ass flute), a fog machine, and his band.
Readers, prepare for your heart start beating irregularly as I introduce you to Matthew Jordan Hemerlein who goes by his stage name, Lo-Fang. I’ll keep this post short, because my main purpose is just to turn you onto his music and have you listen to it, instead of having you read my prittle-prattle.
But, before we get to that, I do have a few points to make. If you were to ~ahem~ stalk him, as I have, you will notice that the indie-alternative and classically trained musician only has a handful (of thousands) of Instagram and Twitter followers, which included me before I deleted most of my social media. But it doesn’t make sense! In my personal opinion, he should have a much higher following since he opened for Lorde in Spring 2013.
But anyway, the 19-year-old Australian singer wasn’t the only one who wanted something to do with the Maryland born artist. Baz Lurhmann, the director of Romeo + Juliet (1996) and the The Great Gatsby (2013), requested Lo-Fang to record a slowed down, sexed up rendition of the classic Greece song, “You’re The One That I Want” for a Chanel °5 advertisement.
