15 steps towards a more anxiety-free life

dontpanic

Life is full of stressors, especially in an academic setting, whether you are a student or a teacher.

As a community, we should be proud of high academic achievement, but at what cost? It seems every year, more and more adolescents (and adults) need help dealing with their unmanageable anxiety.

A couple of weeks ago, reality’s cover story was about panic attacks, which I admitted experiencing. However, I’ve been able to gain better control of them by employing a new, appreciative outlook on life.

With warmer weather having arrived, I’ve decided to give my life a “spring cleaning” (cliché, I know). Here is what I’ve done to live anxiety-free — for the most part, anyway.

Clean mind

1. Maintain a clean bedroom, car, house and landscape day to day; however, do a major cleaning Saturday morning so you feel rejuvenated for the next week. Get the cleaning and organizing done early so you aren’t dragged down all day.

2. De-clutter and don’t hoard things. Make room for the future, while holding onto the very best of the past. Let go.

3. Make lists! They work wonders if you tend to forget a lot of things.

4. Decrease your technology and social media usage. Disconnect. That means deleting any outdated phone contacts, unfriending anyone unimportant in your life (I deleted more than 600 Facebook friends and now I have roughly 200), deleting your Twitter, Tumblr, Vine, outdated emails and apps. When you’re done with that, limit and restrict any social media sites still in use. Delete. Delete. Delete.

5. Leave early for school, work or any other commitments instead of being “on time.” And guess what? You won’t have to deal with traffic.

6. Get dressed and make your bed every morning — that way, you have made an effort to start the day! Don’t forget to open windows to let fresh air in.
